A Darlington-based jewellery designer is making the most of a longer stay in the UK by turning her 40+ years of experience in the jewellery trade into a new business, thanks to help from TEDCO Business Support.
Wendy Edmonson (60) set up Jini Ord after working in the jewellery business since the late 1970’s. Although an experienced and skilled buyer and designer, Wendy relocated to Spain in 2019, continuing her career on a freelance basis using established contacts in the industry.
Wendy comments: “I’ve owned a property in Spain since 2004 and quite happily split my time between Spain and the UK, continuing my work on a contract basis but largely enjoying a more relaxed pace of life. I came back to Darlington in 2020 to visit my mum and as a result of the Covid lockdowns, ended up staying long-term.
“That stay has now been extended indefinitely as I realised it was time to put my experience and skills into action to create Jini Ord as a jewellery brand of my own. I want to offer jewellery that is unique but luxurious and showcases my extensive experience in designing pieces that offer craftsmanship and elegance.
“Jini Ord is actually my grandmother’s name and her personality seems to balance perfectly with what I foresee for the brand as it grows – namely classic stone set and silver jewellery that appeals to women looking for a slightly more bespoke style.”
Jini Ord Jewellery is now available to buy online via the main brand website with the range expanding over the course of the next 12 months as new pieces are created by a specialist silversmith commissioned by Wendy to put her designs into practice.
Wendy comments: “I’m lucky to have worked many years in the industry so have a good eye for quality jewellery but also a list of contacts that I know can create quality-led pieces for the Jini Ord brand. I create my own pieces of course and happily do one off commissions but for more specialist designs, a qualified silversmith is required to get the best finish for my customers.”
Wendy worked alongside Judith Wheatley at TEDCO Business Support to set up the business as part of the NEA programme. TEDCO Business Support delivers the New Enterprise Allowance scheme throughout Darlington and provides help to eligible candidates aged 18 and over considering self-employment with business advice and guidance to help take new enterprise from idea to launch.
Wendy comments: “I can’t thank Judith enough for her help and assistance in getting Jini Ord to where it is today. She has been a constant source of knowledge and experience in sharing the process of how to run a business and the possibilities to move it forward. It’s been incredibly valuable to me to have her helping me every step of the way.”
Jini Ord is now trading with the range set to expand dramatically in the coming months once the first shipment of exclusively designed pieces arrive for sale.
Judith Wheatley, TEDCO business advisor comments: “Wendy has such extensive experience in the jewellery trade that it seems almost unbelievable that it has taken her until now to put her skills into self-employment and sell her own designs. She has been a real pleasure to work with and Jini Ord already has a bright future ahead of it as the brand grows in the run up to Christmas. I wish Wendy the best of luck in the future.”
