Don’t get stuck in a rut when it comes to your small business

Starting a business is a big challenge, but running it is arguably an even bigger one. You might think that the hardest work is behind you once you’ve got your business off the ground, but it actually takes a lot of time and effort to keep things going at a steady pace.

And it’s not enough to just want to stay afloat. As a small business owner, you should be actively aiming to grow your business and go from strength to strength.

This might sound like a daunting task, but understanding exactly how you can grow your business is half the battle. That’s where we come in.

We’re here to make things clearer for you with 4 simple yet effective ways to promote growth in your start up business. Let’s take a look.

Make a website that works for you

There are three rules to your business website: it should be professional, easy to use and in line with your brand. If you can tick all these boxes, you’re on to a winner.

In today’s digitally driven society, your business’s online presence is more important than ever before. You need a website that represents your brand, designed with as much care as a physical store.

Make sure the customer journey is clear and easy to follow, with calls to action at every stage.

Don’t underestimate the power of marketing

You might have the best product in the world, but that’s not much use if nobody knows about it. A good marketing strategy with a healthy budget behind it is key for any small business in order to build awareness and ensure sustainable growth.

Every business is different, which means every customer base is different, too. Through analysing data, trial and error, and a smidge of educated guessing, you need to work out where on the web your customers like to hang out, and what sort of content they like to see. Advertising to the wrong channels for your business is like shouting into a black hole, except it’s costing you money you don’t need to be spending.

Ask customers to spread the word

You can talk about the benefits of your business all you like, but nothing you say will be as powerful as an honest recommendation from an existing customer. From clothes shopping to booking a holiday, buyers are far more likely to be swayed by the words of another consumer than by the business itself.

So be sure to give your customers the option to share their thoughts about your business. This can be through online reviews, social media comments or through reward schemes where they unlock perks by introducing new people to your services.

Focus on the basics

When you’re trying to build a business in its early days, you’ll probably get bombarded with offers of the latest systems and tools, promising every benefit under the sun. But getting sucked into these systems can mean a hefty upfront pay out at a time when you can’t necessarily afford to be frivolously spending.

Instead, make sure you have all the basics in place, including any connections, devices and software, which is absolutely imperative to the running of your business. You need tools which are going to help your business hit the ground running, not move back your starting point.
