OUTSTANDING OFFICE SPACE

Published on: Monday 11 May 2009

Berwick WorkSpace has been recognised as one of the region's most innovative renovation projects at the 2009 RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) North East Renaissance Awards. At a glittering ceremony in Newcastle, Berwick's flagship office space was shortlisted for a Regeneration Award beating off stiff competition from multi-million pound projects in County Durham, Northumberland, Teesside and Tyne & Wear.

Held to showcase the North East's most inspirational developments, the awards are open to projects of all sizes from large retail developments to small landscaping schemes. Despite the economic downturn, organisers received a record number of entries with 51 of the original 74 making it to the final shortlist. Berwick WorkSpace did exceptionally well to be Highly Commended, coming second in its category after the £66 million Middlesbrough College development and holding its own against other much bigger investment projects including the £35 million Gateshead College project.

Berwick WorkSpace houses 35 offices and meeting/event facilities in a building which combines award winning architecture, traditional materials and the latest technology. Commenting on the awards, Andrew Martin, Berwick WorkSpace Manager said, "This recognition for the centre is absolutely fantastic. The fact that the judges acknowledged it as a prime example of a successful regeneration project highlights the impact that Berwick WorkSpace has had on the local community."

The Renaissance Awards judging panel is made up of property professionals who assess each project on a range of criteria including its design, planning, construction and final appearance. Commenting on the 2009 entries, Jennifer Welch, Operations Director for RICS North, said, "We've seen some truly world-class projects come to fruition over the past year, all of which are playing a hugely positive role for those living, working and visiting the region."

This was confirmed by Chairman of the Judges, David Furniss, a chartered surveyor and Head of Atisreal's Newcastle Office, commenting on the exceptionally high standards he said, "The level of the competition was so high this year that the judges also made a number of commendations, projects which in other years could have been outright winners."

This latest achievement follows the success of Berwick WorkSpace last year, when it was awarded the United Kingdom Business Incubation (UKBI) Newcomer Incubator of the Year award, the national award for business incubators.

Located just off Marygate, Berwick WorkSpace continues to lead the way as a centre of excellence for the town. It is now home to a number of inspirational businesses who enjoy the benefits of centrally located, attractive office space with on-site business support.
