Quadrus History

The Quadrus Centre

The construction of The Quadrus Centre, a £5 million state-of-the-art office development, located on a key site at Boldon Business Park overlooking the lake, was completed in May 2005. The distinctive cedar-clad, cube shapes of this hi-tech building which can be seen from the A19 at Boldon transformed the gateway to the Borough and the iconic building is being seen as a high profile symbol of South Tyneside's future development.

A joint initiative between South Tyneside Council and TEDCO, work on the project began in July 2004 following several years of research and consultation. When TEDCO opened its second workspace building (TEDCO Business Works) in South Shields in 2000, there was very little office space available for start-up and growing businesses in South Tyneside. As a result, a lot of businesses left the borough because they could not find the right quality of space.

A study was carried out and the ideal site was identified next to a lake on the Boldon Business Park, adjacent to the A19. Initially a two-storey building was designed, but not adopted following the production of the "Transformation Plan" for South Tyneside which was developed by international consultants "Comedia" in 2002. As the transformation plan was published, it became clear to the Council and TEDCO that the new business centre was an opportunity to make a big and bold statement about the future direction of South Tyneside.

The original design would have created a sound building which would do the job functionally, but it was no different to most other modern office buildings. So a decision was made to go back to the drawing board and come up with something inspirational and iconic for South Tyneside - and The Quadrus Centre as we see it today was born.
